Supported Type Nickel Catalyst

The choice of supported type nickel catalyst is extremely important and has a significant effect on the reformer and performance. Choosing the correct catalyst has a direct impact on plant rate, tube life, methane slip and the formation of carbon, which can have a significant and detrimental impact on the reformer performance and operation

1. Type - supported type nickel catalyst on an alkaline carrier.

2. The ratio of H2O:C - 3.0:1 - the catalyst must work stably with a decrease in the ratio of H2O:C - up to 2.75:1. The catalyst should not be subjected to carburization with a short-term (30 sec) decrease in the H2O:C ratio to 2:1.

3. Form - granules (tablets) with the number of holes ≥4.

4. The service life of the supported type nickel catalyst is at least 6 years. It is confirmed by the reference of work in tube furnaces of large-capacity ammonia units.

5. The content of methane (CH4) in the gas after the primary reformer - approaching equilibrium no more than 10°C in the first 3 years, no more than 15°C - at the end of the company (6 years). It is confirmed by the reference of work in tube furnaces of large-capacity ammonia shops.

6. As an option, it is proposed to load the supported type nickel catalyst into the pipes by a method with low labor intensity and a small spread in the resistance of the pipes. 

7. Consider loading the top layer with pre-reduced kind to speed up the commissioning of the furnace.

Typical supported type nickel catalyst loadings depend on the product being produced and the reformer type; however, some generalisations can be made to allow the operator to determine the optimal kind loading for a reformer.
