The water vapour generated by the reaction can dilute the polymerised combustible gases and inhibit the spread of combustion, and the newly generated alumina also has a high activity, which can adsorb soot particles and play a role in suppressing smoke.
In addition, the ultrafine aluminium hydroxide has better drip resistance, promotes charring, can be retained in the polymer for a long time and increases its resistance to arcing. After dehydration, ATH generates evenly distributed metal oxides with good refractory properties on the surface of combustible materials, which can form a dense flame retardant barrier together with other carbon compounds, isolate the air and reduce the burning rate, thus reducing the rate of mass loss of decomposition products and preventing the spread of flame.
