Silicone rubber is a kind of special synthetic rubber, different from most of the c-C bond main chain, the main chain of silicone rubber is si-O bond structure.The particularity of silicone rubber structure determines its special chemical properties, such as high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, high pressure resistance, arc resistance, electrical insulation, leakage resistance and chemical inertia to lubricating oil and other media.Due to its excellent electrical insulation and leakage resistance, silicone rubber is very suitable to be used as an organic insulation material in the electrical and electrical industry. In recent years, silicone rubber insulators have been more and more widely used in electrical insulation systems, such as power station insulators, switch insulators, insulator sleeves, etc.Since the 1980s, the demand for organosilicone composite insulators in high-voltage lines has been increasing year by year, and they have been widely used in the national power grid.Silicone rubber insulator has its special properties:


1. Hydrophobicity

Silicone rubber insulators have good hydrophobicity.The surface of silicone rubber has the inducing force and dispersion force to the water, so that the water on the surface is scattered without falling down.This is because the water molecules inside the liquid are much more attractive to surface water molecules than the external air, so that most of the fog beads and water droplets are spherical existence, when the fog beads and water droplets continue to grow, will fall in the silicone rubber slope sliding force, making silicone rubber show hydrophobicity.


2. Electrical properties

There is no conductive structure in silicone rubber, and there is no conductive ion in the molecules, so silicone rubber is a good insulator, with a large volume resistivity.Secondly, silica and aluminum hydroxide are added in silicone rubber, conductivity is not big, and because silicone rubber has hydrophobic mobility, particles are basically wrapped in the molecular internal, it is difficult to contact with the outside of the water, unable to form ions;The number of carbon atoms in silicon rubber molecules is less than that of organic polymers. Even when burned, silicon dioxide produces insulation attached to the surface, so its electrical insulation and arc resistance are excellent. After years of practice and development, silicon rubber has been widely used in high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage circuits.


3. Resistance to electric leakage and corrosion resistance

The leakage marks are caused by the accumulation and spread of carbides caused by the conductance current and spark discharge from the contaminant.The electrical resistance and corrosion resistance of silicone rubber can be improved by adding proper aluminum hydroxide filler.Aluminum hydroxide dissolves at high temperatures during discharge and also reacts with free carbon.Aluminum hydroxide is decomposed into aluminum oxide and water vapor, and the heat absorbed by the reaction is 2.09kj/mol, which greatly reduces the surface temperature of the material. At the same time, water forms a strong steam airflow at high temperature, which can brush off the carbon particles deposited on the surface of the sample and weaken the development of electric marks.Aluminum hydroxide reacts with free carbon and converts it to volatile carbon (CO or CO2), which can weaken the development of electric trace.In addition, the thermal conductivity of aluminum hydroxide and aluminum oxide produced by the reaction is good, it can effectively conduct the energy generated by discharge, limit the generation of thermal oxidation and thermal degradation, and reduce the decomposition of silicone rubber and the formation rate of carbon particles.

The smaller the particle size of aluminum hydroxide, the more uniform the distribution inside and on the surface of the material, the faster the thermal decomposition rate, can effectively inhibit the formation of carbonization channels, improve the ability of leakage resistance to mark.Because aluminum hydroxide contains a lot of hydroxyl, too much aluminum hydroxide content, will make the silicone rubber surface hydrophilic, once there is water on the surface, it will form a water film, resulting in flashover, too much aluminum hydroxide will also affect the mobility of small molecules in silicone rubber.

In the formulation of silicone rubber, aluminum hydroxide has great influence on mechanical properties, electrical properties, hydrophobicity and flame retardancy of the products.Years of studies have shown that the addition of aluminum hydroxide filler can improve the performance of silicone rubber, such as resistance to electric leakage, corrosion, arc and flashover.

The effect of aluminum hydroxide on the physical, mechanical and electrical properties of silicone rubber insulators was studied by changing the particle size and adding amount.When the amount of aluminum hydroxide is higher (≥90), the particle size of aluminum hydroxide is smaller, and the effect on the physical and mechanical properties of silicone rubber is smaller. Increasing the amount of aluminum hydroxide has a negative effect on the physical and mechanical properties of silicone rubber.The electrical properties of vulcanized silicone rubber increased with the increase of the amount of aluminum hydroxide, and the second-stage vulcanization could significantly improve the insulation resistivity and voltage breakdown strength and stabilize the region.Aluminum hydroxide can effectively improve the resistance to electric leakage and corrosion of silicone rubber.When silicone rubber is used as electrical insulating material, it must be filled with appropriate amount of aluminum hydroxide to meet the use requirements of electrical equipment.
