Aluminum hydroxide, as an inorganic filler, is different from polymeric materials in physical form and chemical structure. The affinity between them is extremely poor. In order to change ATH's surface activity, we can make surface coating by using surfactants or coupling agents. The surface activity of surface-coating aluminum hydroxide increases and the affinity with the resin is enhanced, improving its physical and mechanical properties. The surface treatment also can increase the amount of aluminum hydroxide added to improve the flame retardancy and reduce the cost of the product. Aluminum hydroxide modification can increase the processing fluidity of the resin and improve the processing properties. Reduce the moisture absorption rate on the surface of aluminum hydroxide and improve the electrical properties of flame retardant products.

Surface Treatment Method:

(1) Dry modification

After preheating the modified aluminum hydroxide powder to a certain temperature, the modifier is slowly added dropwise to the high-speed stirring aluminum hydroxide powder and starts to keep time, and the reaction is stopped and packed after a certain time.

The advantages of dry modification are low requirements for equipment and simple operation. The disadvantages are high labor intensity of workers, serious pollution, low production efficiency, low coating rate of aluminum hydroxide powder, only 10%, the modification effect is poor and unstable.

 (2) Wet modification

Wet modification is in the production process of aluminum hydroxide powder, the synthetic aluminum hydroxide slurry after filtration, washing, filter cake pulping, adding modifier to the pulped slurry at a certain temperature, stirring for a period of time, filtering drying and breaking up after packaging.

The advantages of wet modification are low labor intensity of workers, no dust pollution, high production efficiency, high coating rate of aluminum hydroxide powder, at 20-30%, high and stable modification effect. Compared with the dry modification, the wet modification process is longer and requires higher equipment requirements.
