Activated Alumina for Gas Drying

Activated alumina for gas drying is made of alumina hydrate crystals, processed and activated, and is an important solid adsorbent. Mainly used as desiccant, adsorbent for gas purification, adsorption deacidification agent for transformer oil, turbine oil, catalyst and carrier in petrochemical industry, etc.

According to different use requirements, activated alumina for gas drying generally has particle size specifications that can adapt to different reaction conditions and equipment shapes, high mechanical strength and large adsorption surface area.

1) Particle size specification

Activated alumina powder for gas drying is generally 10 microns to 50 microns; Spherical particles are generally divided into 1-3 mm, 2-3 mm, 3-5 mm, 4-6 mm and 5-8 mm, etc.; 

All are white dry adsorbents.


2) Bulk density

The bulk density of activated alumina for gas drying varies depending on particle shape, size, activation conditions, and manufacturing methods. Generally 0.4~0.9 kg/L.

Generally, the larger the pore size of the product, the lower the bulk density.


3) surface area

All good adsorbents have a certain surface area.

The surface area of the activated alumina for gas drying also varies greatly with the use requirements and preparation methods, ranging from 100 m2/g to 400 m2/g.


4) Mechanical(Crushing) strength

Mechanical strength is an important indicator of granular adsorbents in use. Activated alumina for gas drying not only has high mechanical crushing strength and wear resistance, but also has high volume integrity after immersion and water absorption.
These properties are far superior to silica.


5) Pore volume

The pore volume of activated alumina for gas drying depends on its pore size and the sintering state of fine pores.

According to the pore size: the small pore size is 20Å, and the large pore size is 40Å~50Å. The corresponding pore volume is generally between 24 and 37 cm3/g.

Conditions of Using


On the other hand, the use of activated alumina for gas drying, whether placed after purchase or in specific applications, should be carefully noted, so as to improve the adsorption capacity of the product.


1. Don't open the package of activated alumina for gas drying before use, so as not to absorb moisture and affect the use effect.

2. It's suitable for deep drying under conditions of pressure greater than 5 kg/cm2.

3. After a certain period of use, the adsorption performance of activated alumina for gas drying will gradually decline. The absorbed water should be removed through regeneration in order to repeatedly use the gas in the regeneration operation:

(1) Dry gas with lower or the same pressure than in drying operation.

(2) A dry gas with higher or the same temperature than the drying operation.

(3) The heated wet gas;

(4) Wet gas after decompression.


The product that uses activated alumina for gas drying necessarily has requirement to dry humidity.
