Four Main Processes for The Production and Preparation of Propylene

Summary of Propylene Process

At present, there are four main processes for the production and preparation of propylene, namely, crude oil catalytic cracking, naphtha steam cracking, MTO or direct CTO after raw coal to methanol, and propane dehydrogenation.

According to the statistics of Zhuochuang Information, in 2020, the proportions of the four types of processes were 28%, 29%, 24% and 19%, respectively, an increase of -4%, +4%, -2% and +2% compared with the previous year.

With the gradual release of the production capacity of Hengli Petrochemical and Zhejiang Petrochemical integrated in the refining and chemical industry, the proportion of steam cracking process production capacity has increased significantly; the MTO/CTO production capacity has not been put in much, and the proportion has declined.

In the future, the newly added propylene production capacity will be mainly released from the two processes of naphtha cracking and propane dehydrogenation.
