Properties of aluminum hydroxide

Aluminum hydroxide (also called aluminum hydroxide trihydrate [AI(OH)3] and aluminum metahydroxide, ATH for short) is a kind of flame retardant material with the appearance of white powder, crystalline and amorphous. Because it has 3 major functions of flame retardant, smoke elimination and filling, and is chemically inert, non-toxic and does not produce secondary pollution, it is known as a pollution-free flame retardant both at home and abroad, and is a typical representative of inorganic flame retardants, accounting for more than 80% of the consumption of inorganic flame retardants.

At present, aluminum hydroxide used as flame retardant in domestic and foreign markets is mainly α-AI(OH)3, which belongs to monoclinic crystal system. Compared with other inorganic flame retardants, the advantages of aluminum hydroxide are mainly manifested in the following five aspects.

1.Outstanding effect of heat absorption and temperature reduction

The content of crystalline water in aluminum hydroxide, up to 34.46%, when the surrounding temperature rises above 300℃, all this water precipitates out. Due to the large specific heat of water, when it turns into water vapor need to draw a lot of heat from around. Magnesium hydroxide also contains water of crystallization, but the water content is only 30.6%, inferior to aluminum hydroxide.

2.No smoke and harmful and toxic substances are produced in the combustion

3.Filling quantity is large

4.Adequate resources, easy to obtain and cheap

5.Wide application
