Alumina hydroxide as flame retardant, its main component is α-alumina trihydrate. It is a crystalline or amorphous white powder whose crystal structure consists of tightly packed hydroxyl ions arranged in a square AB double layer, among which are aluminum ions. 

Aluminum atoms occupy about two-thirds of the pores in the formed octahedron, leaving the rest as voids. Closely packed hydroxyl ions are connected to two adjacent layers, thus forming a layered structure.
